To Be Fair to Mill City
Mill City is the competitor we respect most, and this page should say why.
They publish their prices. In an industry where nearly everyone hides behind “request a quote,” Mill City and Primo are the two companies that put the number on the page. That is a real service to buyers, and it is the only reason this comparison can be as direct as it is.
Their roasting school is the best known in the business and a great many good roasters learned the craft on it. RoastPATH has a free tier, which undercuts our $250 a year outright — on software cost, they win. At the 15 kg size Mill City also publishes a higher hourly figure than we do, over 105 lb of roasted coffee an hour against our 95, though the two are not measured on an identical basis, so weigh them against your own batch times rather than taking either number at face value. And moving fabrication to Minneapolis is a serious investment in American manufacturing that deserves to be recognised rather than spun.
The bottom line: this is the one comparison where nobody has to take anyone's word for anything, because both price lists are public. Matched on batch size, the Primo is $12,000 to $22,000 less. Mill City's software is cheaper and their school is better. If that trade is worth $16,000 to you at the 20 kg size, buy the Mill City with our blessing. If it is not, the XR-Series does the same work for less, and it has been built in California the whole time.

As of September 2026 the Legacy MCR series lists at $19,500 (MCR-2E), $20,500 (MCR-2D), $29,600 (MCR-3D), $33,800 (MCR-6), $41,600 (MCR-10), $52,000 (MCR-15), $65,000 (MCR-20) and $98,000 (MCR-30). The USA-made M-Series MCR-6 lists at $38,200, and the M-Series 10 and 20 kg machines are quote-only. Confirm current pricing with Mill City.
Is Primo cheaper than Mill City?

At matched batch sizes, yes. A 15 kg XR-15 is $40,000 against a 33 lb MCR-15 at $52,000. A 20 kg XR-20 is $49,000 against a 44 lb MCR-20 at $65,000. An XR-30 is $76,000 against a $98,000 MCR-30. Primo also builds a 70 kg class and custom machines from $195,000; Mill City's published line stops at 30 kg.
Are Mill City roasters made in the USA?

Mill City has moved fabrication to a Minneapolis facility and markets the new M-Series as Made in the USA, while the older MCR machines are now listed as the “Legacy MCR Series” and Mill City's own page says it continues to operate a fabrication facility in Shenzhen. Which has better software, Roast Master or RoastPATH?

On cost, RoastPATH wins and we will not pretend otherwise: Mill City offers free RoastPATH plans with paid tiers starting around $9 a month. Roast Master is included with every Primo, free for the first year and $250 a year after, which is about $1,000 over five years. Both machines also work with Cropster and Artisan, so neither one locks you into its own platform. Choose on the features you will actually use — the cost difference is small next to the price of the machine.
